KEY CONTROL
This feature takes a closer look at Key Control. We will take an in-depth look at Key Control and ways to achieve it.
What is key control?
Key control is the ability to effectively manage all copies of keys to your business or home. CPSL believes highly in absolute key control. The only way to acheive absolute control is to have a patent controlled key system in place in your home or business.
The first thing to remember about locks and keys is to keep keys out of circulation as much as possible. The potential for theft due to use of unauthorized key duplicates is stunning. Just think how many people have used your keys, or been given a copy. Housekeepers to child care providers to valet attendants. Next think about all the different places a key can be made, from hardware stores to shoe repair shops. When was the last time you were asked for identification when getting a key made?
Common misconceptions
My key says "do not duplicate" on the back. No one can copy this key it is against the law.
Not so in most cases. Unless your key is patent controlled it can and will be made most anywhere.
I have an alarm system.
Great. We recommend an alarm as part of an overall security system to notify proper authorities after a break in occurs. At CPSL were are in the business of prevention as well. Having a proper lock and control of your keys is very important.
I just bought locks from the local hardware or big box store.
While at the store did you notice that there are only so many key combinations available already keyed? Most come in some sort of standard keyway, meaning literally thousands of people across america have the same key as you do.
All it takes is for a sly person to follow you in the store and buy the same lock as you. Then they can follow you home and mark your house on the list to rob.
I just built my house. No one has lived here but me, so I know that no one has my key.
Did your contractor have a copy of your key before you moved in?
The fact is that in most lock brands have little over 4,000 usable combinations if master keyed, or construction keyed. Think... how many homes and businesses may have your same key?
If you live in a medium to large size of neighborhood, 150 houses or more, the chances of your key being the same as another home in the neighborhood is around 1 in 50.

For Businesses and Institutions
Key Control for businesses and institutions is a much bigger issue. Master key systems, many employees having keys, and employee turnover increase risk of unauthorized duplication and lack of key control.
A Key Control Policy is an organized and formal security document which addresses control of master keys within a building or facility.
